I'm new to DnD and I'm playing my first campaign as a Paladin. I learned that I could make holy water and the idea came to me if I could make holy oil that coats a weapon. Would it be possible to do? Is that something I need to ask the DM? Those are once per attack though and dependant on spell slots. Holy Oil would be like once per oil flask and last for more than one hit.

Then you have the option of trapping unholy things in a circle of holy oil that you put on fire. Take a look at one of the features of the Ceremony spell from Xanathar's Guide to Everything:.

Personally, I'd allow you to do so as an action. The coat of holy water would then be good for a single hit. It's DM dependent, but assuming you're playing 5e there are other ways to get the same idea that are much simpler and probably more effective.

Prayer for Anointing Oil!

Look into your smite spells and divine smite ability in particular. I mean, you're a Paladin, you can go around blessing whatever you want, that doesn't mean it will be reflected in game statistics without the consent of your GM, however. That said, if I were your DM, I'd say yes. How you'd want to use it would depend on how I'd treat it: would this be something you'd make and give to others to use?

Or is this something that you'd use for yourself? If it were something you'd want to give to other people, I'd treat it like a reskinned serpent venom. It would deal radiant damage instead of poisonand takes a will save, rather than a con save, for half damage. To make it, you'd need and potentially need proficiency with alchemist's supplies or a poisoner's kit to properly ensure the oil doesn't lose its charge as you're preparing and bottling itas well as the time and supplies to produce it the same time and money that serpent venom would take.

Given their insidious and deadly nature, poisons are illegal in most societies but are a favorite tool among assassins, drow, and other clever creatures.

Poisons come in four unique types, each with their own applicable uses and scenarios. Some rare poisons can be used in multiple ways, such as the veinrot poison, which is classified as both an Injury poison and an Ingested poison. Using or applying a poison, regardless of the type, requires an action. Contact poison can be smeared on an object and remains potent until it is touched or washed off.

A creature that touches contact poison with exposed skin suffers its effects. A creature must swallow an entire dose of ingested poison to suffer its effects. The dose can be delivered in food or a liquid.

The DM may decide that a partial dose has a reduced effect, such as allowing advantage on the saving throw or dealing only half damage on a failed save. These poisons are powders or gases that take effect when inhaled. Blowing the powder or releasing the gas subjects creatures in a 5-foot cube to its effect. The resulting cloud dissipates immediately afterward. Injury poison can be applied to weapons, ammunition, trap components, and other objects that deal piercing or slashing damage, and generally remains potent until delivered through a wound or washed off.

A creature that takes piercing or slashing damage from an object coated with the poison is exposed to its effects. Venoms come from creatures that naturally produce them, and typically require no preparation other than harvesting the venom from a dead or incapacitated creature of the appropriate type.

Harvesting venom requires 1d6 minutes followed by a DC 20 Intelligence Nature check. Proficiency with the poisoner's kit applies to this check if the character doesn't have proficiency in Nature. On a successful check, the character harvests enough poison for a single dose. On a failed check, the character is unable to extract any poison. If the character fails the check by 5 or more, the character is subjected to the creature's poison.

Make a ranged attack against a target creature or object, treating the oil as an improvised weapon. On a hit, the target is covered in oil. If the target takes any fire damage before the oil dries after 1 minutethe target takes an additional 5 fire damage from the burning oil.

You can also pour a flask of oil on the ground to cover a 5-foot-square area, provided that the surface is level. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 5 fire damage to any creature that enters the area or ends its turn in the area.

Each has a distinctive purpose in the Church. The oil of the sick, which is pure olive oil, is used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. While ideally celebrated with the community during the Mass for the anointing of the sick, this sacrament can be administered any time and in any place.

The priest lays hands on the sick or elderly person, says special prayers and anoints the person by placing oil in the form of a cross on the forehead and hands. Through this sacrament, God gives the sick person grace and strength to bear the illness or infirmity. In addition, many Catholics have witnessed the power of this anointing to bring spiritual, emotional and even physical healing. Each year we witness the use of the holy chrism when young people are confirmed, and at the Easter Vigil when adults are confirmed after baptism. Chrism oil is also part of the baptismal rite. Magic oils are similar to potions, except that oils are applied externally rather than imbibed. A potion or oil can be used only once. It can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute. Potions are like spells cast upon the imbiber.

The drinker of a potion is both the effective target and the caster of the effect though the potion indicates the caster level, the drinker still controls the effect. A typical potion or oil consists of 1 ounce of liquid held in a ceramic or glass vial fitted with a tight stopper. The stoppered container is usually no more than 1 inch wide and 2 inches high. The vial has AC 13, 1 hit point, hardness 1, and a break DC of Vials hold 1 ounce of liquid. In addition to the standard methods of identification, PCs can sample from each container they find to attempt to determine the nature of the liquid inside.

An experienced character learns to identify potions by memory—for example, the last time she tasted a liquid that reminded her of almonds, it turned out to be a potion of cure moderate wounds. Drinking a potion or applying an oil requires no special skill. The user merely removes the stopper and swallows the potion or smears on the oil. The following rules govern potion and oil use.

Drinking a potion or using an oil on an item of gear is a standard action. The potion or oil takes effect immediately. Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack including grappling attacks against the character forces a Concentration check as for casting a spell. If the character fails this check, she cannot drink the potion.
